“Earlier this month someone in the public gallery yelled an insult at him and his response was to ask the man to step outside,” the mayor said.

“What can I say .. . his behaviour certainly is a challenge.”

The federal government really needs to look after our war veterans a lot better. Poor Bill, it seems, was forced to sharpen one too many pencils from his post.

Police were called to eject Clr Bill Pickering from last week’s Ryde City Council meeting. The police action followed Clr Pickering’s refusal to obey a mayoral order not to continue with his alleged abuse of other councillors and inferences of alleged corruption.

He left the chamber shortly before police arrived. Mayor Clr Ivan Petch said he had called C lr Pickering to order three times before a vote was taken by councillors to have him ejected.

“He refused to desist in his disruptive behaviour and after councillors voted to have him ejected he said he was not going,” the mayor said.

“It was then I took the appropriate action to call the police.”

Clr Pickering has claimed during recent council meetings he has been “gagged” by Mayor Petch who said his actions on Tuesday were not a case of
stiffling democracy and that he stood by the decision to call the police.

“It was the right action to call the police because Council’s security guards do not have the authority to forcibly remove a councillor,” he said.

Other councillors declined to comment on the incident which they say is the sole responsibility of the mayor under the Council’s Code of Conduct
and also because their comments could prejudice an active police investigation.

The mayor added that he respected Clr Pickering’s right to raise concerns about corruption but did not condone his recent derogatory comments about the local media or his inflammatory remarks to the public gallery.

“Earlier this month someone in the public gallery yelled an insult at him and his response was to ask the man to step outside,” the mayor said.

“What can I say .. . his behaviour certainly is a challenge.”

Councillor Pickering was named as the Liberal Party’s candidate for mayor shortly after September Local Government elections when the Liberals were defeated by Labor and the Independents.

  1. Whoever supports this rubbish is as inept as Vic Tagg was when on Council ! And he was very inept !

Why don’t you disclose your name ans association to some current and very former Ryde councillors ? – no courage perhaps ?

    1. Apologies for the delay in posting your comment – it must be hard when no one’s listening. You are entertaining though, I interpreted your comments on another person’s ineptness and your demands for disclosure as clear attempts to entertain our readers by ultimately appearing to self-deprecate. For the record, my name is Dick and my association is The Bill Pickering Appreciation Foundation. We have NO members! Courage is something we have plenty of – unlike those nasty people (hmmm, I wonder who?) that were behind those smear pamphlets during the elections – they were quite Flagship-esque, don’t you think??!
